Cilji projekta

Izhajajoč iz teh premis, projekt preučuje Heglovo preoblikovanje pojma in podrobno analizira njegovo novost. Z natančnim branjem Hegla in njegovih sodobnikov, prvič, podrobno preučuje »organološko« formo pojma, njegov odnos do sfere političnega ter proces formiranja racionalnosti.

Hegel's Political Metaphysics

While Hegel defined German classical philosophy as a theoretical realization, and thus the fulfillment, of the turning point that occurred in political practice with the French Revolution, the basic premise of the project is rather the opposite one, namely that we are able to understand the world but are still unable to think political practices. This premise includes the thesis that the same standpoint is also present in Hegel’s central conceptual operation, which is contained in his understanding of the Concept. From the very beginning, Hegelianism was caught in a constant stream of positive and negative reactions, but Hegel’s political philosophy was almost universally judged to be reactionary. Some commentators have even regarded it as the scientific abode of the Prussian reactionary spirit. By the project’s lights, however, the essential, productive, and even revolutionary character of Hegel’s thought must be sought precisely in the dialectical relationship between the Concept and the political form.

Based on the assessment that Hegel carried out a conceptual turn, the dimension of which is not yet fully understood, the main goal of the project is to determine the logical structure of Hegel's Concept, whereby philosophy would be able to return to its basic task: to develop the conceptual tools for thinking its own present. In this regard, the project opposes the depoliticization affirmed in the postmodern turn. Only in this way can philosophy contribute to the understanding of the problems of our time. Hegel’s philosophical program can therefore be understood as a response to the crisis of the traditional regime of thought, which in many respects reflected the political situation of his time. With Kant’s philosophy and “Pantheism controversy,” the crisis of thought spread universally, while at the same time bringing about a radical response from the Romantics, who advocated the abolition of reasonable thought. Therefore, Hegel, as a consistent proponent of the standpoint of Reason, sought to develop concepts that would have an internal structure allowing him to think that which, from the position of the Understanding, is inconceivable. In an attempt at devising a new metaphysical framework, Hegel under the influence of Spinoza’s political philosophy fundamentally transformed the common understanding of the logical form of the Concept: first and foremost, he conceived of the Concept in accordance with the model of form of (political) activity and life.

Project goals

Proceeding from these premises, the project examines Hegel’s transformation of the Concept while analyzing its novelty. By way of a close reading of Hegel and his contemporaries, the project examines, firstly, the "organological" form of the Concept, its relation to the sphere of the political, and the process of the formation of rationality. Secondly, it highlights the new metaphysical character of the Concept embedded in the political form. Thirdly, on the basis of the transformation of Hegel's Concept, it demonstrates Hegel's actuality while reviving the field of political philosophy. Thus, the project intervenes in contemporary philosophical discussions, especially as it relates to attempt at formulating a modern politics of knowledge. Additionally, by utilizing Hegel's speculative logic, the project expounds how the moments of decision and subjective self-determination are built into the very form of the Concept. Finally, the project’s added value consists in the establishing of a research infrastructure for the study of classical German philosophy in Ljubljana, facilitating a closer collaboration with leading European centers in the field of German classical and political philosophy.

Introductory meeting of the project group through the ZOOM platform.

As part of the Hegel's Political Philosophy project, the Research Group for Classical German Philosophy will be holding regular seminars, which will strive to revive political philosophy by actualizing Hegel's concept in it's political form.

If Hegelism was trapped from the very beginning in a constant stream of affirmative and negative judgments, Hegel's political philosophy has long been considered reactionary and ultimately wrong. And yet the original, productive, and even revolutionary character of Hegel's thought must be sought precisely in the dialectical relationship between concept and political form. Based on the assessment that Hegel created a conceptual turn, the dimensions of which have not yet been fully understood, the main intention of the seminar is to determine the logical structure of Hegel's concept so that philosophy could return to its basic task, thinking of its time.
