Students get acquainted with the corpus-based approach to the analysis and description of language, specifically in the case of Japanese, and with the difference between the empirical analysis of corpus materials and the analysis based on intuitive judgements / elicited examples. They learn the basic criteria for building and tagging corpora, main sources (available corpora) and tools (concordance tools, morphological and syntactic analysers, statistical packages) for the analysis of Japanese. Through the actual process of building a small corpus and analysing the individually-posed research questions, they learn about the possibilities and restrictions of the corpus method.
